This year’s Elisa Izaurralde Memorial Lecture is entitled:
“MicroRNA maturation” and will be given by:
Prof. Dr. V. Narry Kim
Director of the RNA Research Center
Institute for Basic Research
Seoul, South Korea
The Elisa Izaurralde Memorial Lectures are a loose succession of lectures in memory of the former director at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen (2005-2018) and of her achievements in the fields of RNA biology and post-transcriptional gene regulation.
Narry Kim is only the second speaker in this series (after Witold Filipowicz in 2019). She made seminal contributions to the field of small RNA-based gene regulation and is probably best known for her discoveries of how micro RNAs are being generated and processed in the cell to fulfill their regulatory roles.
Narry Kim plays a major role in the advancement of basic science in South Korea and has received numerous prizes and awards. Among those are the L'Oreal-UNESCO Women in Science Award (2008), the Ho-Am Prize in Medicine (2009), considered equivalent to a ‘Nobel’ Prize in South Korea, and the South Korean Scientist of the Year Award (2016). Furthermore, she was listed by Nature among the Science Stars of East Asia in 2018.
This year’s Elisa Izaurralde Memorial Lecture will take place on April 30 at 9:30 as an online event. Narry Kim will be introduced by Dr. Oliver Weichenrieder a former co-worker of Elisa Izaurralde and Prof. Dr. Ralf Sommer, Director of the Department of Integrative Evolutionary Biology, who will say a few words on the intention of this lecture series.
Additional information and an abstract for the lecture can be found here.
